Explore the French Riviera this summer

Summer is just over the horizon, and as the days get longer and the sun gets warmer, thoughts turn to the summer holidays and the adventures that can be had. This is the time of year that the Cannes Film Festival is held, and the sight of celebrities soaking up the Côte d’Azur sunshine may inspire you to start planning a trip to the French Riviera – a destination as glamorous as it is relaxing. Although the beaches are the main attraction here, there’s plenty to do away from the golden sands and here are some of the most interesting things to see.

San Tropez

Playground of the rich and famous, San Tropez is a must-see resort with its yacht-filled harbour and pavements lined with cafes that are perfect for people watching. Explore the waterfront and enjoy a spot of window shopping.

France’s fifth largest city and the capital of the French Riviera, Nice is a bustling city, bursting with culture and a vibrant nightlife. Art lovers will love the museums here, while those who love to shop, eat and drink will find plenty to keep them busy in this glittering resort.

Those with an interest in history will enjoy a trip to Fréjus, a city dating back to Roman times. As well as the Roman remains that can be seen here, there is also plenty of medieval architecture to discover.

No holiday in the Riviera would be complete without a visit to Monaco, a state as small as London’s Hyde Park and yet with a fame all of its own. Forever linked with James Bond and movie stars, the Monte Carlo Casino is an essential stopping-off point, as is the iconic bend in the Grand Prix track, where you can still see tyre marks on the road.

If you are exploring the French Riviera this summer, enjoy and don’t forget to take your EU medical card, which makes you eligible for free treatment while abroad, with you. If you need to make an EHIC application, visit European health insurance card and complete the online form.
