3 top European footballing weekends

Europe is home to some of world football’s ‘cathedrals’ – towering, historically important, and in many cases beautiful stadiums which play host to sporting drama throughout the football season. For this reason, a long weekend based around a visit to one of the continent’s football hotspots can work perfectly, also allowing you time to see the other sites a city has to offer either side of the match. Before you grab your passport and your EHIC (the new version of the old  E111 card) here are three options to consider:

1. Milan

The San Siro stadium was renovated to host the 1990 World Cup, and remains as a magical arena for football which attracts fans from all round the world. Because the ground plays host to both AC Milan and their rivals Internazionale, on most weekends during the season you will find one team or the other are playing. You might also want to enjoy a tour around the famous fashion boutiques of Milan, or take in an opera at the Teatro alla Scala.

2. Barcelona

Home to the Camp Nou, Barcelona is the perfect chance to combine an unforgettable football experience with a visit to one of Europe’s most attractive cities. The all-conquering FC Barcelona team boasts a frighteningly good front line that features three of the best attackers in Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, meaning you can look forward to some of the most scintillating football on the planet. Sustain yourself on a rich Spanish diet of tapas and red wine, and stroll around the Gothic Quarter to view some of the finest architecture anywhere on the continent.

3. Munich

As well as playing host to the world famous Oktoberfest beer festival, Munich is also noted for its formidable football team; Bayern Munich. The atmosphere in the Allianz Arena is known throughout the world for its noise and passion, and the friendly German supporters make a trip to a Bayern game something you will treasure forever. There is also no shortage of historical and cultural sights to check out, including the Nyphenburg Palace and Marienplatz, where you can find many landmarks and critically acclaimed eateries.
