3 top European destinations for outdoor lovers

Some of Europe’s most incredible offerings lie in its innate beauty. Outdoors lovers are spoilt for choice when looking for ways to walk, swim, run or cycle their way around the continent. Here are our top three picks for holidays for outdoor lovers.

1. Jura region, France

Everybody has heard of the Alps but the sub-Alp region of the Jura might be a little less familiar to you. This is a truly beautiful area with so much to explore that you’ll be spoilt for choice. We recommend staying at one of the campsites or in a chalet near one of the many Jura lakes. Here you will be able to hire a kayak and take it to explore the lake or maybe try your strength on a high ropes coast in a lakeside forest. Go running or hiking in the surrounding hills before retreating to the lakeside to chill out and go for a swim. Refuel on delicious local wine and cheese.

2. Switzerland

Head to the hills and Switzerland is more beautiful than you could ever imagine; think lush green forests and sparkling blue lakes. We highly recommend going canyoning, and you will come alive as you tumble into the clear water and scramble over rocks. After an adrenaline filled day in the water, you’ll be ready to head off the next day and rent a bike to go exploring. Simply being in Switzerland will be enough whatever you do, with incredible views as far as the eye can see.

3. The Danube, Germany

The Danube, Europe’s second longest river, stretches all the way from Germany to the Black Sea, but we especially love the part running through the Black Forest in Germany. Enjoy the slow pace of river life while surrounded by lush forest. The best way to explore this amazing, snaking river is by bicycle. Load up your panniers with treats from the incredible German bakeries and pedal your way down the river. Treat yourself at the end of the day with a tankard of local beer and a hearty feast.

Make sure you’ve applied for your EHIC well in advance of travelling around Europe. Your EHIC card will grant you free state-sponsored healthcare while travelling around the EU and the EEA, saving you a lot of time, money and hassle in the unfortunate event you fall ill on your travels!
